Summary

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with Monumental’s efforts - there should be enough for fans to sink their teeth into

The throttle… is good

For a long time the MotoGP series has remained impenetrable to all but the dedicated few, it’s steep learning curve and unwieldy controls proving too difficult to master for it to truly take off in the mainstream. The fact that it’s a dry, almost clinical take on racing hasn’t helped either. Much of that was addressed in last year’s edition of SBK 09 and with new publisher Capcom on board, Monumental Games is looking to make a return to form for MotoGP and create a much more forgiving and accessible two-wheeled racer.

The Arcade mode is a lot of fun

In a move that makes super bike racing far more engaging MotoGP has a mixture of controls to accommodate all skill levels - it’s clear Monumental wants to cater for an audience larger than the hardcore and with a set of modes and careers that look far more like they belong in a four wheeled racer, MotoGP 09/10 is a genuine surprise. The usually light Arcade mode now boasts a level of depth and challenge with dedicated timed events and structure (think old school arcade racers) to work through that add some punch but it’s with the full championship season and Career mode that MotoGP is looking to ensnare players. It’s not just about how you perform on the track that will make the difference, managing your team by hiring and firing and keeping your funds and bike in check will be crucial if you’re to even have a chance at the top three.

There’ll be plenty of cosmetic options and tinkering to play around with in the Career mode and with a new racing engine, MotoGP 09/10 is really making steps to right the wrongs of its past. One of the more exciting additions is the ability to download free DLC throughout the real life 2010 season as it happens. Races look and feel much more exciting, even an added points system (similar to the Kudos points in Project Gotham) gives a new flavour and depth that’s been sorely missing from the series. From what we’ve played this is feeling like an invigorated franchise and one worthy of some buzz.

Final Summary

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with Monumental’s efforts - there should be enough for fans to sink their teeth into
