Verdict

A much better game than Spider-Man 3. It still has some issues but they don’t detract enough from the enjoyment that can be
“Spidey, the king of the swingers...here he's a bit of a minger.”
5/10

Spiderman 2 was great. It was the first game that made a good attempt at conveying what it would be like to be Webhead himself, swinging in a gangly fashion through the 'scrapers of New York City. It was followed by Ultimate Spiderman, which was cack. That was followed by Spiderman 3, which was three quarters cack. Now we have Web Of Shadows (terrible name), which is hmm, a bit cack.

The plot is some gubbins involving Venom and his newfound ability to spurt symbiote juice everywhere and spawn an army of alien bastards. Or is it an invasion from his homeworld? Who knows, because the narrative is broken so badly that it's almost like it's been done on purpose just to piss off the people actually playing the thing, even though that makes no ****ing sense at all. Maybe I just don't understand the marketing minds of people who make half-arsed games.

Anyway, it's really just an excuse to shoehorn in any old Marvel character as a 'guest star' and to give you the option of playing in the old red and blues or - gasp! - the evil black suit. You see, there's the old morality thing going on here as at certain points in the game you can choose whether to be good spidey or bad spidey and change the course of story. The morality meter also affects general play, even though there's so much crap going on around you that it's impossible to save every citizen and stop every crime that you inevitably become a 'bad guy' in the eyes of the cops etc. Yawn...

Highlights: Spidey is so cool, when he punches cars they disappear. THEY DISAPPEAR.
The game wanted me to save 20 civilians. I did. Then it wanted 50. I saved 50. Then it wanted 100...arghh.
The game wanted me to destroy 20 symbiotes. I did. Then it wanted 50...you get the picture. Boring.
Wolverine fights like he's on speed. Lots of speed.
The game features the Tinkerer. Don't know who that is? Exactly. And who ****ing cares anyway.

Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a mildly enjoyable, though supremely glitchy and boring game says he can.
