Verdict

Should be plenty until Modern Warfare 2 time. Lovely.

All multiplayer and no maps makes World At War a dull boy... luckily, though...

Despite a generally negative air surrounding Call Of Duty: World At War in the snootier areas of the gaming press, few could argue its success. Sales are a given with this franchise these days, of course, but Treyarch and Activision’s commitment to maintaining the game’s lifespan through DLC has proven more than welcome.

The two map packs already released have done great work in genuinely improving World At War as a multiplayer shooter, and the imaginatively titled ‘Map Pack 3’ is no different. At a handsome 800 MS Points, the pack contains four new maps – Breach, Battery, Revolution and a brand new excursion for the Left 4 Dead–troubling side game, Nazi Zombies.

There’s no real way to cover something as dry as a map pack without breaking it down into its constituent parts, so we’ll start with the part that most eager practitioners of online violence will probably dive straight into – Der Reise, the Nazi Zombie map. There have been a few changes to the game since its inauspicious beginnings as an unlockable extra – in fact there’s a touch of Fallout-type humour in the ‘Pack A Punch’ gun-upgraders, complete with Forties typefacing and flashing lights. It all adds a depth and colour to a mode that’s proven extremely popular, and should add a good few weeks of undead anti-fascism to the package.

Breach, Battery and Revolution are more typical in their approach, but no less impressive. For all the criticisms that can be fired at World At War’s single-player, there’s never been a question about Treyarch’s ability to build a taut and well-constructed deathmatch arena. Battery is probably the most successful in this respect, with numerous clever choke points and an asymmetry that makes it ideal for Capture The Flag games.

Revolution is probably the weakest of the four maps, offering a solid playground for most game types, but with little in the way of flair or ambition. It slots nicely into the rotation, though, and doesn’t harm the value or quality of the pack itself. The same cannot be said for Breach, which is a sumptuous, atmospheric warzone that feels like a real battleground rather than a hastily constructed amphitheatre for war, and is perfect for level games of Team Deathmatch.

Final Verdict

Activsion’s continued support for World At War has helped to keep it hovering near the top of of the Xbox Live charts for nearly 9 months now, and Map Pack 3 will only see this trend continue. 8.1/10
